What is actually
being tested.

Every intervention in a registered, currently-running human trial for hair loss, read from ClinicalTrials.gov and sorted by phase. Not the ones a press release says are coming — the ones with an accession number, a sponsor and an enrolment target.

What this page is, exactly

  • It is a mirror of a registry, not a news feed. Every value in the table is a field on a ClinicalTrials.gov record: the phase the sponsor registered, the status the sponsor last verified, the condition the sponsor entered. If this page and the registry disagree, the registry is right.
  • Registration is not evidence. A Phase 3 entry means a sponsor has planned a Phase 3 trial and told a registry about it. It does not mean the drug works, that the trial will finish, or that it will ever be published. Trials are abandoned, and the abandoned ones do not announce it.
  • Nothing here has been read or graded. No trial on this page has been assessed by anyone here, and the rows are not ranked by how promising anything is. They are ordered by phase and date, because those are the only two things this page can order by honestly.
  • None of these trials has posted results. These are studies that are running or about to run. There is nothing to summarise yet, and this page will not summarise anything when there is — a result belongs beside the paper that reports it, in a guide, quoted.
  • This is not a way to find a trial to join. It is a picture of a field. Eligibility, sites and contacts live on the registry record, and joining a trial is a conversation with a doctor. Nothing here is medical advice.

How a trial gets onto this page

A registry is authoritative about values and silent about selection. Every field on a record is checkable. Whether a record belongs on a hair-loss page is not a field at all — it is a query somebody wrote, and it is the only place a page like this can lie to you.

The mistake this page is built to avoid

The obvious key is the drug name, because drug names are what a reader recognises. It is wrong, and not hypothetically. NCT07318688 is a recruiting Phase 3 trial of HMI-115, sponsored by Hope Medicine, first posted in January 2026. HMI-115 is a prolactin-receptor antibody in development for androgenetic alopecia and for endometriosis — and NCT07318688 is the endometriosis one. Its registered condition is Endometriosis.

Every field a drug-keyed tracker would have printed about it is true. The row would still have been a lie, because a table of hair-loss trials makes the claim this is a hair-loss trial, and that claim is not in any field on the record.

So the key is the condition, twice over

  1. The search is query.cond, never query.intr. 10 condition searches, printed in full at the bottom of this page, restricted to interventional studies with a status of recruiting, not yet recruiting, enrolling by invitation, active, not recruiting.
  2. Then the study's own registered conditions have to pass. query.cond is a fuzzy search: searching it for hair loss also returns a study of a storybook explaining leukaemia to children, several actinic keratosis trials, and a regenerative-medicine study of inner-ear hearing loss. So a study is kept only when one of the condition strings the sponsor themselves registered matches a rule below — and that string is printed in the table, on the same row, as the reason the row is there.

Registered conditions that are kept

  • alopeciaAlopecia, in any of its registered forms
  • effluviumTelogen and anagen effluvium
  • patternBaldness and pattern loss
  • lossHair loss, shedding, thinning and breakage
  • growthHair growth or density as the registered condition
  • cicatricialThe primary cicatricial alopecias, by their own names
  • hypotrichosisHypotrichosis and atrichia
  • trichotillomaniaTrichotillomania and hair pulling
  • abbrevRegistered as an abbreviation and nothing else

Checked first, and refused

  • excessToo much hair, not too little
  • sensoryCochlear hair cells
  • assayHair as a sample medium, not as an outcome

The rule is strict on purpose, and it costs real trials. A scalp-cooling study registered only under Breast Cancer is about hair loss by any reasonable reading and is not on this page, because its sponsor did not register it as a hair-loss study. That exclusion is listed below rather than made quietly. The alternative — a person here deciding which off-condition trials are really about hair — is an editorial judgement no reader could check, which is the thing this rule exists to remove.

Phase, status, sponsor and condition are reproduced from each record and nothing has been added to them. "Not applicable" is the registry's own answer for a study of a device, a procedure or a behaviour, where the phase vocabulary does not apply — it is not a missing value.

What the condition rule turned away

10 studies came back from the searches above and did not pass, because nothing the sponsor registered as a condition names hair loss. They are listed so the rule can be argued with rather than believed. An exclusion nobody can see is indistinguishable from a bug.

What keying on the drug name would have cost

A rule that only ever admits is unfalsifiable, so the opposite search is run on every refresh — purely to be counted, never to add a row.

Every name below was searched with query.intr — the intervention-keyed search this page refuses to select on — against the same status filter. 806 distinct studies came back that are not in the table above, across 23 names. Each one is a study of a drug a hair-loss reader recognises, registered for something else. The per-name column below sums to 827, because a trial registered for two of these drugs is returned by both searches; the headline counts each study once.

HMI-115 is the honest one to look at: the count is small, and the study behind it is a Phase 3 trial of a drug that genuinely is in development for hair loss. That is the whole difficulty. Ruxolitinib and platelet-rich plasma contribute hundreds of obviously-unrelated studies; HMI-115 contributes one that would have looked exactly right.

The exact searches

Printed in full, because a listing you cannot reproduce is a listing you have to take on trust. Every search is additionally restricted to interventional studies with a status of recruiting, not yet recruiting, enrolling by invitation, active, not recruiting — completed and terminated trials are deliberately absent, because this page's claim is present tense.

The guides this sits beside

A guide is a snapshot and this is a feed; they answer different halves of the same question. The guides explain what a treatment is and what the published evidence for it shows. This page only tells you what is currently registered as being studied.
